Hey Ubuntu users! So you have The Gutsy Gibbon installed. If you were a new downloader and haven’t used Ubuntu before, you are probably wondering of an easy way to get all of the “essential” software.
Well, it isn’t that hard. Since you are running 7.10, just click on one of the links below.
Ubuntu Restricted Extras
Kubuntu Restricted Extras
Pretty cool, huh? All you need to do is click Yes, and then type in your password. You now have Java, Flash, and a whole bunch of media codecs and fonts.
For Debian and Ubuntu Feisty, install the “apturl” package to make these work.
We’re looking to integrate this APT functionality into FOSSwire later this month. Until then!

Very cool, but can you tell me how this thing works? Is it modify the source list with a new repo, or what? Thanks.

It installs anything that the user has on their repository list. For example, if I make a link to, say, apt:firefox-3.0, it will only work if that user has previously enabled the Universe repository.

Doesn’t work on the default Kubuntu Gutsy install, with an added Firefox… Konqueror brings up an interesting Apt searcher page, never seen that before…
This seems simple, but it also seems like the beginning of the end; the future soon belongs to unwanted software installations on Linux machines. “Click here to add 25 fun fonts and emoticons!” and suddenly idiots have Linux machines with viruses on them.
