Slashdot are reporting that Canonical, the company behind the world's most popular Linux distribution Ubuntu are planning to release a new Ubuntu derivative.
Called Ubuntu Studio, this new release will be focused at multimedia creation - so things like video and audio editing and graphics. This is an area (particularly audio and video) where Linux lacks specific distributions tailored to multimedia. While free software has got some high-profile applications like Cinerella, Linux generally speaking isn't currently a platform for doing this kind of media/creative work.
Ubuntu Studio aims to change that.
Content creation is a space where the Mac currently rules the roost, and Apple have some of the most used professional media creation software in the business. Of course, there still is plenty of similar software available for Windows as well, but this is an area traditionally dominated by Apple hardware, Apple's home-grown software and software for the Mac. (On an unrelated note, Apple's Shake is actually available for Linux and OS X, but the vast majority of their software in this class is Mac OS X only).
We'll definitely be watching this project closely at FOSSwire, and we'll keep you updated with all the news on this and other Ubuntu projects.
