Discussion: Google Chrome for Linux
-
!http://files.fosswire.com/2009/06/chromelogo.png(Google Chrome logo)!
So it's definitely speedier than Firefox on Linux, but with other promising WebKit-based browsers on Linux, do we actually need Google's influence to have a quick, WebKit rendering browser on Linux.
Do Google Chrome's unique features like its multi-process architecture actually make it particularly compelling, or is it just another competitor in a crowded browser market?
I'd be interested to hear everyone's thoughts and opinions on how Chrome fits into the wider Linux picture.

I always say, the more the merrier! More than one browser brings option to the users. It also makes the developers compete with each other: They will copy ideas from each other, improve their software and try to be all around better.
It all comes down to what drives a person to improve upon their work. I think most people are driven by seeing something better and trying to compete with it. You can see this in sports all the time. Competition is a good thing because it brings innovation. Even if sometimes it can have some negative side effects I think the benefits are heavier.

I'm still waiting for it on Mac. :P
I do think though that while it may not particularly upset the browser power structure in a wider sense, the innovations that Google has made are going to be the catalyst for a new generation of faster browsers. Google Chrome might not end up being a major contender in the browser market because of that, but it definitely is acting as a catalyst.
